Star Trek: Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas recently shared an alternate version of Captain Liam Shaw's tragic death scene. Shaw, played by Todd Stashwick, became a fan favorite during Picard's critically acclaimed third season, which saw many of the original cast members from Star Trek: The Next Generation return. Picard season 3 followed Admiral Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) as he sought to help his old friend Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and the son he didn't know he had, Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers). While much of the hype for Picard's final season was due to the returning TNG cast members, Stashwick's Captain Shaw became one of the show's best breakout characters.

Captain Shaw tragically sacrificed his life in the penultimate episode of Picard season 3, allowing his friends to escape. In his final moments, he finally referred to his First Officer Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan) by her preferred name and transferred command to her. Terry Matalas shared a short video clip on his Twitter of Captain Shaw's final moments, with an extra line of dialogue. See Matalas' post below:

The "But don't touch my stuff" line is very Shaw and brings a moment of levity to an otherwise devastating scene. The line does take away a bit from the moment when Shaw finally calls Seven by her preferred name, which may have been why it was cut. Still, the clip offers a neat little glimpse into what might have been and underlines what a great character Liam Shaw became.

Captain Shaw Will Return If Star Trek: Legacy Happens

Both Terry Matalas and actor Todd Stashwick have confirmed that Captain Liam Shaw will return in Star Trek: Legacy if the show is greenlit. A proposed spin-off of Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Legacy would likely follow up on several of the threads introduced in Picard season 3. Picard ended with Seven of Nine as Captain of the recently rechristened USS Enterprise-G and Jack Crusher, son of Jean-Luc Picard and Beverly Crusher, being visited by the infamous Q (John de Lancie). These and several other threads could be further explored in Star Trek: Legacy.

Fan demand for Star Trek: Legacy is high, and many people who work within the wider Star Trek franchise support the idea of the show. With the ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, it's likely that audiences will have to wait a little while longer for any official news, but the spin-off definitely still seems to be on the table. Though it's unclear how Liam Shaw would return after his supposed death, those behind the scenes say they have something good planned for his character. Todd Stashwick's Captain Shaw turned out to be a wonderful addition to the Star Trek family, and it would be a shame if Star Trek: Picard season 3 was the last viewers saw of him.
